Preparing Your Surface.
Hello and thanks for visiting My Tiling this is a new site aimed at tiling for DIY the site is still under construction so please bookmark this page see you soon and happy tiling
thanks steve
The first thing when preparing your background is to make sure it is flat and solid ,any loose plaster or holes need to be filled .
Tiling over uneven unfilled walls or floors will make life hard when you come to tile ,getting the surface right before you start to tile will make the job a lot easier ,and takes away guess work in getting your tiles nice and flat if you tile on a nice flat surface and your adhesive has been applied properly with a notched trowel they will go on easily and in time quickly.
A lot of the time you might have new plaster to tile on if you have had a new kitchen or bathroom fitted,in this case the walls should be nice and flat so no worries there .If you need to tile over a wall that most of the plaster has fallen of or the wall is very uneven a quick way out of this is to dot and dab plaster board over it ,this is a quick and easy way of getting your surface ready to tile.
When dotting the board adhesive on the wall make sure the dots are all about 20mm thick more if the wall is very uneven before this you should cut all the boards to size so you can stick the boards straight away .Apply the plaster boards by pushing them firmly on the wall then hold a spirit level or straight edge along them checking they are nice and flat .
This will leave you with a nice flat wall to tile on to .
In the old days the rule of thumb was to pva everything THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO DO IT
PVA does not work with modern adhesives all adhesive manufacturers have there own primers to use along side there products ,I cant stress enough the importance of using the proper primer in some cases you dont need to prime .
Most adhesives dont need primer on new plaster boards for instance but allways check with there recomendations ,Granfix and nicobond the two adhesives i have used a lot have very good booklets on this on what primer to use on what surface here is the Granfix booklet. Booklet.
